Base builders are kind of a fine line between simulators and the RTS genre. And lastly, the subreddit for it is a pretty funny place as everyone bonds over human leather cowboy hats, involuntary organ donation, and cannibalism.Įdit: Also, a lot of people chiming in here are calling simulators base builders.

Also it's mod friendly, so you can customize it as you see fit. I can't check now, but i'd assume you'd be able to see that most of the steam reviews actually have a significant number of hours played.
Life is feudal free form construction how to#
Most people who learned how to play it just keep going back and playing for more and more hours whenever a big patch releases and new features are added. It's relatively cheap and has an insane amount of replayability. I think most people here will probably say that if you liked the concept of Dwarf Fortress, then Rimworld is your best bet. Life is Feudal: Forest Village I never jumped on because it was a game that appeared to be trying to just replicate the boring style of Banished, but with 3D assets taken from the Life is Feudal game and being marked as a full price release into early access. I played it when the game first released and had inexplicable (to me) hype. You never got to know your colonist, or value them. Sorry, but I found banished to be a boring experience that was just about optimizing your layout and that was about it. I am gonna check out Banished since it's on sale (apparently Life is Feudal is not worth it yet), but I am intrigued by all the responses and I will definitely consider some of them in the future. You guys are the experts, do you recommend one over the other?ĮDIT: Thanks everybody for the replies. I hear Forest Village is pretty much one big expansion away from feeling like a finished game.

I've heard Banished gets repetitive pretty quickly and has no overarching goals once you have the basics set up.

However, both have kind of mediocre reviews. With some research, I've found that both "Banished" and "Life is Feudal: Forest Village" look pretty promising.

I'm looking to try this genre out, and I'm particularly looking for something with a medieval aesthetic and some RPG elements. Turns out, base building games pretty much have it covered. It has made me fantasize about a game where you act as a god guiding a village or a group of survivors into growing and expanding into a thriving city or kingdom. So I have been watching a friend of mine play Dwarf Fortress, and while it is entertaining once you understand what is going on, it still seems a little unfriendly in terms of its learning curve (and I don't really care for the minimal graphics aesthetic).
